Why Sustainable and Material-Efficient Packaging Is Becoming a Bigger Priority for European Buyers

Apr 22, 2026

Official EU data shows 79.7 million tonnes of packaging waste were generated in 2023, while the new PPWR will apply from August 2026. Here is why recyclable and material-efficient packaging is becoming a stronger sourcing priority.

Sustainable packaging is no longer only a brand image topic. It is increasingly becoming a practical sourcing priority for importers, brand owners and food businesses. According to Eurostat, the EU generated 79.7 million tonnes of packaging waste in 2023, equal to 177.8 kg per person. Among all materials, paper and cardboard accounted for 40.4% of the total. At the same time, the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) has already entered into force and will generally apply from 12 August 2026.

Why this matters to packaging buyers
For buyers in food, beverage, retail and takeaway sectors, packaging is being evaluated more broadly than before. In addition to cost and appearance, there is increasing attention on whether the packaging uses materials efficiently, whether it can better support recyclability, and whether the structure is more aligned with market expectations in Europe. The shift is especially relevant for businesses sourcing tea packaging, coffee packaging and food packaging.

The market is moving from “sustainability claims” to practical packaging decisions
Official data on packaging waste continues to reinforce the need for more practical packaging development. When a market generates nearly 80 million tonnes of packaging waste in one year, the commercial pressure to reduce unnecessary material use becomes more visible. At the same time, the PPWR is creating a more unified regulatory direction across the EU, which makes packaging structure, material selection and packaging efficiency increasingly relevant in sourcing conversations.

What this means for suppliers
For packaging suppliers, this is not simply a compliance story. It is also a business opportunity. Buyers may increasingly look for suppliers that can offer more practical packaging solutions, including paper-based alternatives where appropriate, better structure optimization, and custom packaging that balances branding, performance and material efficiency.

For companies serving tea, coffee and food applications, this opens the door to more value-added discussions around packaging design, usability and long-term sourcing fit.

At RICHER ECOPACK, we see this trend as an opportunity to help customers build packaging solutions that are not only visually effective, but also more practical for today’s changing market environment. As European requirements and buyer expectations continue to evolve, packaging that combines function, efficiency and customization will become increasingly important.
